Sasol saw this as an opportunity and in 1991 they developed the Osizweni Education and Development Centre to provide teaching and learning support of maths, science and technology for educators and students across all ages.Osizweni has developed into Mpumalanga‚??s premier Science and Mathematics Centre of excellence.
The Osizweni centre hosts over 130 schools from the surrounding areas and creates awareness of science and technology. The centre instils in students the enthusiasm about the wonder and application of the subject through actual experiments, exploration and exhibitions.
Osizweni also offer career guidance sessions and have an interactive, computer-based unit that exposes students to different career opportunities.
Several schools in the area lack the apparatus to conduct experiments and students cannot fully engage in the subject theme. With the Sasol Mobile Lab, teachers are able to convert ordinary classrooms into well-equipped labs within minutes.
The centre annually hosts the National Science Week where over 50 science and technology activities are conducted. One way that Sasol contributes to the activities is by allowing students to visit the Secunda plant, where learners are exposed to first-hand work experience.
The Osizweni centre ultimately aims to become South Africa‚??s be best responsive science centre to serve the educational needs of not only the immediate communities but also beyond the Mpumalanga area.
