Apart from this, we are also proud to have skilled individuals who contribute beyond their employment role and give back to society.
Sello Lelake, from our Secunda site, is what we call a change reactor ' he uses his expert skills and work experience to mentor students in maths and science, during his spare time. Sasol commends him for his dedication to the academic arena by inspiring the youth to enjoy maths and science and encouraging them to pursue careers in these much needed fields.
Due to the low matric pass rates in maths and science, Sello realized that our community is in dire need of skilled people and his solution was to inspire, motivate, and impart his knowledge on these subjects to the local schools students in the Govan Mbeki Municipality.
Furthermore, he wanted to change the lives of the learners through education and provide them with additional classes that allow them a better opportunity to pass.
There is a negative perception that maths and science are difficult subjects, and most learners doubt their potential and capabilities in these subjects. Sello and other like him provide learners with after school as well as Saturday programmes and provide motivational presentations.
This programme has benefited the community as it has alleviated poverty and improved the skills-base. Learners are provided with the necessary knowledge and have pursued careers in fields such as engineering, computer science and the medical profession.
There are many talented young students in our country who require a stepping stone to encourage them to reach for their goals.
You too can make a difference and be a change reactor in your area. If you require more information or would like to contribute towards this project contact Sello Lelake on 017 610 2856 or click on offer help.
