On tap - Mandela day
Since 2008 the SACLA Centre has been torn apart piece by piece by the local gangs and vandals until there was but a mere shell of a building left. All the lights, plugs, the geyser, windows , doors and fittings and fixtures were removed.
Since 2008 the SACLA Centre has been torn apart piece by piece by the local gangs and vandals until there was but a mere shell of a building left. All the lights, plugs, the geyser, windows , doors and fittings and fixtures were removed. The building was barely inhabitable but the Health home based care workers who have a strong commitment to their community carried on regardless in the most shocking conditions.
This SACLA Centre has been the home to 100ā??s of dedicated Home-care Nurses and Care-givers over the past 25 years. This building was also used to house a Disabled Childrenā??s Educare programme and unfortunately this project had to be abandoned as the risk and safety was too high for the children to be housed in the building any longer. However this is our goal for the next year to ensure we bring back this much needed facility for the disabled children in this area.
How did the reserection of the Centre begin?
In July of 2010 the Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille, Mayor Plato and her team dedicated their 67 minutes of community service time on Mandela Day to erect a fence around the SACLA Centre in Khayelitsha. Morgan Freeman and his Cross Country Biker Team also assisted in not only making the day a very special one but a star studded occasion. Bernice Roeland , from Aids Response and the Nelson Mandela Fund organised the event and they have played a supportive role to Green Communities throughout the delivery.
To kick start the project, the Corporate Social Responsibility Team of Santam took ownership of the Centre and donated the sum of R100 000 towards the ā??Extreme Makeoverā? and appointed Green Communities ā?? as the Project Managers to oversee and roll out of the complete reconstruction of the SACLA centre
In December of 2010, Beth McKellar- Basset, the Chairperson of Green Communities along with her amazing team from Correctional Services began the amazing renaissance. The parolees and first time offenders who are doing their Community Service, have worked tirelessly with her almost every weekend this year to complete this ā?? extreme makeoverā? by July 18th 2011.
So much has been achieved and we have had the most amazing support from the Built Industry. Lizette Swanefelder, the Green Communities Fundraiser and an enigma in the Green Building Industry has played the most important role and has managed with ease and absolute support from her clients to get almost all of the building materials donated. Almost every product has either been given to us at cost or donated outright and these generous companies are as follows from:
